Accelerated Death Benefit
If, while covered under this program for life insurance you become terminally ill, you may request that Aetna pay an Accelerated Death Benefit. You may request this benefit on your own behalf or on behalf of your spouse (if Dependent Life is included) at any time by completing an Aetna Request for Accelerated Death Benefit Form and submitting it to Aetna. When you stop working or are no longer in an eligible class, or you retire, you have options available regarding your current group term life insurance.
Your life insurance coverage may include a Premium Waiver provision. With this provision, your coverage may continue without premium payments if you become disabled before a pre-determined age and the disability lasts for a pre-determined period of time.
A portability feature may be available through your plan. Portability allows you to take your coverage with you if you leave the company.
Accidental Death & Personal Loss coverage
Our Accidental Death & Personal Loss (AD&PL) coverage provides benefits if a covered person is injured in an accident or dies from the injuries. The amount of this payment is determined by a combination of factors, including your coverage amount and the type of injury suffered.
With Supplemental AD&PL, you receive extra coverage over and above your plan’s basic coverage.
The personal insurance
Not all injuries caused by an accident will qualify you to receive benefits payments. The exact types of injury that qualify will be specified by your plan, but may typically include death, paralysis, loss of speech or hearing, loss of sight, third-degree burns, or loss of limbs.
To find out more about your benefits, please review your plan’s Certificate of Coverage or contact your benefits administrator.
Selected plan options
Child care benefit
This benefit helps cover costs associated with child care in a state-licensed child care center in the event of a covered parent's death.
This benefit helps provide a dependent child with an opportunity for higher education when the insured employee's income is lost. For spouses, this benefit helps provide an opportunity for valuable employment training for the purpose of obtaining or supplementing an independent income source.
Repatriation of remains benefit
If a covered person dies while 200 or more miles from home, this benefit provides financial assistance for preparation and return of the deceased's body to a mortuary.
Passenger restraint and airbag benefit
If a covered person is properly using a passenger’s restraint device or if an airbag is activated and neither contributes to saving the covered person's life, this benefit will supplement the accidental death benefit.
If you or a dependent remains in a coma for more than 30 days following an accident, you may be paid a percentage of your AD&PL benefit each month. This will occur for a predetermined number of months.
Your AD&PL plan may also provide benefits for the following losses: paralysis, severance, death, speech, hearing, loss of life due to exposure, presumed loss of life due to disappearance, and disability (related to a covered accident).
